Eat 5 A Day for Good Health!

Brussels sprouts are named after the country’s capital city where they originated - Belgium.

The sprouts are similar in shape and taste to the cabbage from which they originated but have a more pronounced flavor.

Selecting a quality product

Pick sprouts that are bright green in color and uniform in size for even cooki.g. Small, firm, compact sprouts are the best choice. Avoid soft sprouts or those with a dry, yellowed look.

Tips on Storage

Do not wash or trim Brussels sprouts before refrigerating. Store them in a perforated plastic bag for up to a week.

You may freeze Brussels sprouts for long-term storage. Blanch the sprouts for 3-5 minutes and immediately plunge into cold water before draining and storing in an air-tight container. They can even be frozen in a cheese sauce for up to 6 months.

Tips on cooking

Before cooking, remove the bottom portion of the stem and the outermost leaves. Be careful not to overcook.

Ways to use:

Cut in half, place on baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and roast 20-30 minutes
Toss cooked sprouts with olive oil, lemon juice, and a pat of butter
Marinate and use in salads
Steam and add a cheese sauce
